I was vaguely planning the technical fix - if I can get to the point where everything happens via cron jobs I'll be happy.

My backups happen via cronjobs, but this still depends on the relevant computers being turned on and not asleep at the right time.

I was planning on anacron and figuring that I turn everything on often enough for things to work out in the end.

In my case everything is driven from the machine with the backup device, but since you point out that anacron will solve this perhaps I should rethink that...

I don't think I'd be comfortable with that, because it would involve all the backup hardware being permanently connected and switched on. My most common cause of hardware failure in the past has been power surges, so it's now become important to me that at all times there's an air gap between all my wiring (mains, network, you name it) and at least one of my backup devices...
