It's odd. I buy CDs and books almost exclusively in shops, because browsing is half the fun and only resort to online places if I can't find the things in a bricks and mortar establishment—and I try to use the online outlets of nice bricks and mortar places when I can (Rough Trade are especially great for sticking in messages written on promotional postcards and stuff with your order).

DVDs however I tend to buy online. I know what is coming out that I want, there's less of an impulse element, and I don't konw of any DVD shops that I really want to keep in business. Frankly I'd be sorely tempted to yarr any non idependent film I wanted to watch as revenge for those fucking annoying anti piracy adds, but my DVD player doesn't do DivX.

It depends on what sort of DVD (etc) they are as to whether I buy them online or in the shop. Mostly I get box sets online, and any films that I particularly want that will be expensive, things I plan etc. I buy in shops on a whim based largely on price, or if I've decided that I *really* want to watch whatever it is *right now*.

All three; insufficiently often. Although for DVDs, I tend to rent (if only I could remember where I left the current rented DVDs so I could watch them...)

Mostly what I buy in shops is opportunistic bargain/clearance stuff.

I even prefer to do my browsing online. If I really need to try something before I buy, I get it from the library first.

Officially I don't spend money on books now, until I've got the to-read bookcase a bit more under control. But sometimes I crack and go wild in Oxfam or Borders.
