FTAOD I was thinking of intentional cosmetic modifications, but feel free to tell me about your neural jacks, consensual alien parasites, nanotech imune system upgrades, etc.
Hmmmm, is a navel piercing worksafe or not? Probably is because showing it in public isn't going to get me arrested for indecent exposure, but it's not exactly something that would be suitable to display at work.
My actual tattoo is worksafe, but I certainly wouldn't show it to anyone at work. It shows in a swimsuit or short shorts, but I wouldn't be wearing those at work...
I suppose it's geeky because of its origin (Discworld) but definitions of geeky vary.
I'd normally interpret 'work safe' as regarding whether someone might get sacked for having it on their screen. Obviously there's variation in how strict employers are but I'd expect only the very strictest to object to unclothed middles, so I'd say a navel piercing was likely to be work safe.
I've counted plastic surgery for correction of congenital abnormalities (cleft lip and palate) as "some other kind of body modification", though the purpose of it clearly differs from cosmetic adornment.
Yeah, I've three in one and two in the other, one of the latter being in the top rather than the lobe. I'm counting each of those separately, regardless of when they were done.
To me it seems odd to count one-in-each-ear as one piercing, particularly given this doesn't then distinguish from people who have only had one ear pierced.
Oh, I didn't think to count mine as not work-safe. I don't tend to display it at work. But then I don't tend to display it socially. This is more due to fat bellies being considered socially unacceptable in public then to navel piercing in particular.
An odd thing I notice about body piercing is that more than any other phenomenon in the world it causes me to learn the names of body parts I hadn't previously known. It's just caused me to look up "tragus" on Wikipedia, and it was another person talking about piercings a couple of years ago who caused me to look up where one's septum might be. Piercers and piercees seem to be the only people (other than, I must presume, those in the medical profession) with a serious need to identify such bits of the body with more precision and efficiency than "that bobbly bit at the front of your ear" :-)
I was pierced on two occasions, and wear either one or two pairs of earrings, so it seems odd to me to think of them as four separate holes, since they don't have four separate identities, unlike, say, one set of ear piercings, a nose, a belly button, and something NSFW, which I'd think of as four, not five.
It may be moot anyway for me, since I haven't tried putting earrings into the second set in about two years now...
I see what you mean. Mind you even when I only had one in each ear I didn't always wear earrings as pairs. Not least as a result of losing one of a favourite pair and not wanting to stop wearing the other occasionally.
I counted my ears seperately. I might get tattoed at some point, but I'm also considering trying it out with eyeliner first. All WS.
In fact, one of coworkers has a back tattoo which is occasionally visible, and another has a belly button piercing likewise. So they're WS, because I work in a primary school and it's really strict.
I clicked "I have some other kind of body modification", but there is some debate between me and the_local_echo about whether it counts, as it's a "correction" rather than a "modification".
I now see that other people have counted (presumably a pair of) ear piercings as one. I currently have two pairs of ear piercings (amounting to a total of four holes), but I am planning to get another (single) one on Friday. :)
I think teeth might count, especially if it's something done mostly for cosmetic purposes. Hair and shaving aren't really permanent enough I'd have thought.
Total holes, 5; total actual separate piercing events, 4. Still >3 :-) Ambitions for more piercings, 1; tattoos I'd love but will never be able to get because tats squick M completely, 2.
Not having any NWS piercings though. My bits work just fine as is, and I don't trust bits of metal near my nerves.
Cut marks that were made deliberatly, but have now faded.
I need to get them redone and added to at some point. The problem is in the eyes of the law although you can make holes in people with their consent you cannot make cut marks.
On behalf of my brother stu_dio, who is hardly ever on lj: Piercings - yes! Nostril [years ago, maybe healed], both nipples (http://www.flickr.com/photos/stu_dio/330520813/in/set-72157600519767307/), one or possibly both conches (http://www.flickr.com/photos/stu_dio/331754942/in/set-72157600519767307/), tongue IIRC)
Tattoos - three that I'm aware of, one of which is Not Small (http://www.flickr.com/photos/stu_dio/359423808/in/set-72157600519767307/), and one Large (spikey tribal design, just visible in that pic on his shoulder blade - it goes across to the other shoulder, down his back and continues most of the way down one (possibly both) legs.
Other mods, NWSness - well not as far as *I* know ! 8-)

I counted my ear piercings as one, btw. Also, does this mean we're going to get pictures of NWS piercings now? ;)

I had a very small operation to cut the small flap of skin you get in the middle of your upper teeth, and of course have the stick-inna-arm.

How many holes do you have pierced in each ear?

(Not wimpy enough to back out of the NWS piercing, but still...)

I've got 5 piercings in each ear, but they aren't symmetrical, so I'd find it very odd to describe those as one piercing.

I can see an argument that a simple ear piercing isn't quite as ... committed ... as a Prince Albert. Perhaps we should have a weighting table.

Not that I have one, I hasten to add.

I do fancy a Haida Raven tattooed on the small of my back, though.
