Re-record, not fade away

There are no more VHS tapes or playback equipment in the house.

I've noticed quite a few charity shops recently with big signs up saying 'we don't want your stinking VHS tapes', or at least more polite words to that effect. What did you manage to do with them? Did you just have to chuck them out?

Local council have a recycling bin for them.
