The Walter Mitty comment has also been denounced by Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman Menzies Campbell as "the most tasteless intervention that can be imagined".

I'm sure I can imagine considerably worse. (Self-righteous posing by the media and politicians on the back of a still very murky affair might indeed be a candidate.)

If we were talking about someone with no experience of dealing with the press then perhaps I'd agree with that but Tom Kelly is a former journalist (apparently (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3125267.stm)) and is paid to deal with the press; one would have thought he'd have learned a bit of elementary caution by now...

....and it does indeed appear that he was trying to use 'off the record' to put a point of view over anyway.
