The Walter Mitty comment has also been denounced by Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman Menzies Campbell as "the most tasteless intervention that can be imagined".

I'm sure I can imagine considerably worse. (Self-righteous posing by the media and politicians on the back of a still very murky affair might indeed be a candidate.)

I can imagine much, much worse. But I doubt I'd ever come up with something quite so crass when I was trying to be sensitive and unantagonistic!

If it really was an off the record comment (and of course we don't know if this is true) then the person who published it has to be even more unfeeling, for he/she has upset both the family and the other Kelly.

If we were talking about someone with no experience of dealing with the press then perhaps I'd agree with that but Tom Kelly is a former journalist (apparently (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3125267.stm)) and is paid to deal with the press; one would have thought he'd have learned a bit of elementary caution by now...
