LNR's computer is funted; after six months or so of being reluctant to boot it is now refusing entirely. (Disks and fans spin up but the BIOS never runs and the screen never gets a signal.) After a bit of investigation I think it's the motherboard or possibly the CPU which have gone bad; if it's the memory then that would require two DIMMs to have simultaneously failed in the same way, and if it's almost anything else that would require it to have a negative influenced when not even connected.

So we're buying most of a new computer. We plan to get these bits:

  • Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 120GB IDE disk
  • Suntek Viper ATX desktop case w/ 300W PSU
  • Sony CRX220E1-10 CD-RW
  • ASRock K7VT2 motherboard
  • 1.3GHz Duron

We'd keep the old case but the location of the PSU means that a Duron plus heatsink would never fit. The hard disk is actually for another computer. The CD-RW is a new toy, not just a replacement for LNR's somewhat flaky CD ROM drive. The motherboard apparently takes PC100 memory which we have some of already.

If anyone's heard any bad things about the above, now would be a good time to say so!

If you need a decent CPU cooler give me a shout - I've got a spare Alpha PAL8045 cooler around which is designed for first-gen 1.4GHz Athlon CPUs (run at highest heat of AMD chips) which is up for grabs. It would need a motherboard with the mounting holes around the CPU socket tho as the AMD spec for Athlon motherboards specifies.

We already have a cooler for the Duron - a while ago my Athlon's fan started making funny noises for just long enough for me to order a replacement, and then behaved fine ever since.
