I like the apparent hardness of the subject contrasted and defused by the softness of the setting. That's rather interesting.

"Ian's new-job party". Ah. That would probably be the Ian I blithely said "yes, I've got the invitation, thanks" to and then couldn't find the invitation when I couldn't remember when the party was....
