Things found in the house

You can just see the brown cable disappearing into a hole in the wall at the far right of the picture. I've since remove the two cable ties to get the full length of the black cable, and re-routed the white cable you can see at the top down through the bricks (you can see this in the next picture).

Normally there's a black slab on top of this lot; to get the (previously undiscovered) plug into the socket you'd have to leave a gap the width of the cable. The cable then runs out the bottom of the brickwork, under the fireplace and back into the brickwork on the other side, inside which:

I think I'll rescue the four-block, which assuming I don't want to engage in bricklaying will mean wiring a plug for the first time in comfortably over a decade.

The painting's going pretty quickly so far.

That is even more barking than I suspected!

Personally I'd still be tempted to get rid of those two brick buildouts, simply because you could then get furniture with actual storage space in their place, but it does look like a bit of a bugger where they meet the fireplace.

I think removing them would come rather close to rebuilding much of the fireplace, yes.

Could you clean them out a bit, line them with something less mucky, and use them for storage of robust things needed occasionally?

It'd have to be occasional to the extent that I didn't mind unplugging the (heavy and awkward) TV from its stack of peripherals and moving it, as well as moving the (heavy and not entirely convenient) stone slab whenever I wanted the object in question.

That's joyfully mad. Thanks.

I've found a couple of "features" in our new house too. Must get round to photographing them.

In fact I didn't even have to pay attention to how the plug was wired so I could put it back together again; as you can (just about) see from the photo, the live and neutral prongs are color-coded.
