Grandiose Arcade

The Grand Arcade opened today.

It's said to mostly contain fashion shops.

It's fairly big.

The predicted bikes didn't materialize, as the bike park was open in time, but someone did park their car there.

It's full of nice patterns.

I assume there were originally more balloons.

I went to have a look this evening, but of course it was mostly shut by then :/

It's said to mostly contain fashion shops.

Much like every other shopping centre in the known universe, then.

It is at least impressive big.

I might one of the rare girls or woman to be absolutely not interested in fashion and don't like shopping even if I had the money. My mum always forced me for clothes shopping. I always hated it. It is not just the problem that trousers and skirts rarely fit. It is just in general that I don't like to try on anything. Now she sents me lots of stuff. My cupboard is overloaded. I can't decide what to keep and what not because it is always useful for a certain season. Many fashion things I simply find impractical and silly for example anything with useless disturbing strings. I don't like the strings on some of my summer tops but I don't want to cut it off and might destroy everything. I saw a child in a nursery where I was temping with leather boots. She had too many strings on the side. She could easily trip over it.

I wonder if it deliberately echoes the strange, victorian-appearing outside but indoors place that's concealed behind the city council cashiers desk in Mandela House ... ?

It reminds me of a prison.

Someone on cam.misc made the comparison to Strangeways, too.

That's not possible now with the density of cellphone shops.

Oh yes, the place with the painted wooden bird of prey hanging from the rafters?

I see what they mean now. Replace the car with a pool or ping-pong table, add a few more stairs, and I can see that.

Those big panopticon hallways are just as good for mall security as they are for prison security, I suppose.

Cellphone shops are the new Shoe Event Horizon.

That remark's just a joke at Apple's expense...

A cow-orker claims that Adams was inspired by Lion Yard containing apparently nothing but shoe shops when it originally opened.

[identity profile] tigerfort.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Adams himself always claimed to have been inspired by the density of shoe-shops on Oxford Street (which was certainly very high at the time).

The scary thing is there actually appear to be *no* shoe shops as yet in the Grand Arcade. At least at a first potter round.

They also have quite sinister-looking security people on the entrances to John Lewis.
