Just 2.

I was going to put Queen Elizabeth II in the woman category, but decided it was far too parochial, so ended up saying ???. Incidentally, I went for the Pope.

Is the pope famous or just his office?

2.5 people listed just the office, 1 listed the office and his official name; nobody listed him as Ratzinger.

How many people were subliminally influenced to answer "The Pope" because of the post's icon? ;^b

One person said they were influenced, I'm not sure that counts as subliminally though and of course I don't know how many others were influenced.

When I was posing the question for anyone (dead or alive), I reckoned up the world in vague sections: China; USA/Europe/Russia; Indonesia and other Asia; Indian/Subcontinent; all Africa and middle East; and then South America and left-overs. I realised I knew very little about 5/6 of the world, and guessed people in those sections would not necessarily know more about the west. So I'd guess the "most famous" is whoever in the USA is also known the most in India and China, or whoever in China is also known in the others, etc. Obviously a famous US president is a likely candidate, as is the pope, but i don't know for sure.

I can't believe nobody else chose the same woman i did... well, i suppose it's more of an Americanism.
