All things considered, I'd rather not.

You evil evil person. But I'd rather read about Diana because there are interesting historical ramifications to do with the monarchy.

how are there ramifications?

[identity profile] stephdairy.livejournal.com 2007-08-31 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
There was a point, when the Queen was holed-up in Balmoral and the public were going hysterical about Diana, where the popular mood began to get a bit nasty. I think at that point, had the Queen not returned to London and addressed the nation, a swelling of republican leanings could have posed a real threat to the future of the Monarchy.

What actually happened is that the shock of the event was the impetus for the Palace to adapt to the new world of 24-hour news and media management: the Monarchy emerged stronger.

wow, just because she died in an accident. crazy, eh?
I'm not particularly pro- or anti-monarchy, but for goodness' sake...

Also the Private Eye coverage of Diana was much funnier.

No, just... no.

Express Watch (http://www.bigdaddymerk.co.uk/mailwatchnew/?cat=5), for all the Madeleine / Diana front pages you could want. It's The World's Greatest Newspaper, you know. The comments on the Express website are good, too - unlike the Mail (and the local papers it owns), these aren't pre-censored.

I thought there for a minute ... a madeleine story with no clearly fabricated and sensationalist headline?! ... then I look at the main story ... DIANA KILLED BY FIAT DRIVER.

[identity profile] uisgebeatha.livejournal.com 2007-08-31 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
Neither, kthxbye.

I'm waiting for the conspiracy theory to emerge that Diana is in fact not dead and has kidnapped Madeleine...

[identity profile] oldbloke.livejournal.com 2007-08-31 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
Or that M was a re-incarnation of D and has been snatched by the lizards to forestall challenges to the monarchic succession.

You, sir, just made me nearly fall off my chair at work. I salute you.

Who's Madeleine?

I know. Who's Madeleine?

Let's face it, the Diana porn is more likely to be worth reading.

OK, that's some quality Sick And Wrong, right there -- good stuff!

[identity profile] the-local-echo.livejournal.com 2007-08-31 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
I voted Diana, just because I have been recently amused by the idea of Prince Philip as an Eastenders villain (http://comment.independent.co.uk/columnists_m_z/mark_steel/article2903522.ece)

[identity profile] armb.livejournal.com 2007-08-31 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
but only if the Madeleine story has some actual news. I'm no more interested in reading "Madeleine still missing" than I am in reading "Diana still dead".
(If we're talking about biography or history rather than "news", then Diana.)

[identity profile] nevboo.livejournal.com 2007-08-31 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is there no "Neither" option ;)

[identity profile] sphyg.livejournal.com 2007-08-31 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Madeleine can (hopefully) still be helped, whilst Diana is well past it.

You missed the "no" option ;-p

Although I'm clearly in the right country right now. All I'm hearing about is cross-dressing teenagers.

Would it be pretentious to say that when I first saw this poll this morning I thought that 'Madeleine' was a reference to Proust, and only realised what you actually meant when I reread it this evening? :-)
