I've decided that it's because they're clever, not intelligent. Mine can't even read the instructions, let alone follow them. They're all thinking about other things when my emails arrive...
I think that the intelligence part is understanding that one should follow the instructions - that is, that the person who wrote them may be more intelligent than you. Therefore it's more of an arrogance question, than an intelligence one.
Your instructions did not include any criteria by which we were to choose, so I picked one on a whim. No assumptions about my belief in the veracity of the statement I picked should be inferred.
