Obligatory...

"Simple instructions killed my intelligent parents, you insensitive clod."

intelligent people can't follow simple instructions

I know they can't. The number of academics here that cannot follow simple set-up instructions...

*sigh*

I've decided that it's because they're clever, not intelligent. Mine can't even read the instructions, let alone follow them. They're all thinking about other things when my emails arrive...

I think that the intelligence part is understanding that one should follow the instructions - that is, that the person who wrote them may be more intelligent than you. Therefore it's more of an arrogance question, than an intelligence one.

...but many of them [choose not to/can't be bothered/don't pay enough attention/fail to follow them for some other reason*].

That certainly applies to people who read the poll and don't submit an answer.

I'm deliberately disenfranchising those people l-)

Intelligent people can follow simple instructions but may choose not to do so, especially if there is a viable alternative.

*chuckle*

I'm deeply amused at your deliberate decision to give the instructions in such a way as they can be not followed.

Don't ask me, guv.

No, I literally cannot bring myself to answer exactly one box...

[identity profile] grendelyn.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Sigh... I'm not sure I know any intelligent people anymore.

They *can*... but often don't.

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Your instructions did not include any criteria by which we were to choose, so I picked one on a whim. No assumptions about my belief in the veracity of the statement I picked should be inferred.

Looks like it's about 25%. Was that what you were expecting?

They always see some ambiguity or missing step or unwanted side-effect or think they can shortcut or...

They can. They just don't.

[identity profile] nomme.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
'Instructions' - are they those bits of paper that get in the way of you getting your hands on the shiny new thing you've just bought?
