intelligent people can't follow simple instructions

I know they can't. The number of academics here that cannot follow simple set-up instructions...

*sigh*

I've decided that it's because they're clever, not intelligent. Mine can't even read the instructions, let alone follow them. They're all thinking about other things when my emails arrive...

I think that the intelligence part is understanding that one should follow the instructions - that is, that the person who wrote them may be more intelligent than you. Therefore it's more of an arrogance question, than an intelligence one.

...but many of them [choose not to/can't be bothered/don't pay enough attention/fail to follow them for some other reason*].

That certainly applies to people who read the poll and don't submit an answer.

Intelligent people can follow simple instructions but may choose not to do so, especially if there is a viable alternative.

*chuckle*

I'm deeply amused at your deliberate decision to give the instructions in such a way as they can be not followed.

Your instructions did not include any criteria by which we were to choose, so I picked one on a whim. No assumptions about my belief in the veracity of the statement I picked should be inferred.

'Instructions' - are they those bits of paper that get in the way of you getting your hands on the shiny new thing you've just bought?
