It happened to my family twice while I was a kid, and it did mildly traumatise me; fortunately it's not happened since — attributable in part to living in a quiet village in John Major's old constituency. The increased burglary risk is one of the things that scares me most about the prospect of moving back down towards Cambridge.
I don't think there was any sensitive data on the laptops at all unless you count SSH private keys, which of course can be revoked at the various targets. My laptop was backed up, N's wasn't but I don't think there was anything on it to care about - it was just used as a portable terminal.
