False dichotomy, though, innit? (Deliberately so on the part of Sellars and Yeatman, I know.) Both sides had romantic heroes and repulsive villains -- sometimes the same people at different times and places. For Cromwell we could pick -- among many other choices -- the return of the Jews to England (right), the brilliant victory at Preston (romantic), the dismissal of Parliament (wrong), and the massacre at Drogheda (repulsive).

I tried to do a similar exercise for Charles, but couldn't think of anything he did that was definitely "right". (Maybe his patronage of van Dyck.)

While I don't have a copy to hand I'm pretty sure it's what the 1066AAT authors used and the web had some support for this when I was checking...
