False dichotomy, though, innit? (Deliberately so on the part of Sellars and Yeatman, I know.) Both sides had romantic heroes and repulsive villains -- sometimes the same people at different times and places. For Cromwell we could pick -- among many other choices -- the return of the Jews to England (right), the brilliant victory at Preston (romantic), the dismissal of Parliament (wrong), and the massacre at Drogheda (repulsive).
