Chocolate powder? Pure cocoa or chocolate only.

Green & Black's chocolate gravel.

That's acceptable, as is Charbonnel and Walker's chocolate or Montezuma's omocatl. I'd also accept the type of Mexican drinking chocolate that comes in cakes that you grate.

Charbonnel et Walker seconded.

There's been some of that in the cupboard at work for months. I might borrow some the next time I need a comfort drink.

Well, I'm drinking chocolate soya milk cold at the moment, but for normal chocolate powder I'd say add a spoonfull of sugar, then boiling water, then a bit of cold milk. Sorry to be a controversialist and all...

You add sugar to something that's already mostly sugar?!

[identity profile] gareth-rees.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Add the powder to a very small volume of milk; stir; and when the paste is smooth add the rest of the milk. Then microwave.

Real chocolate is nicer than powder but too much like hard work.

I used to do that, but later tried adding the powder half way through, and didn't find the result appreciably different, and it's much less effort.

[identity profile] pseudomonas.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
If you use drinking-chocolate powder, yes. If you use cocoa it goes lumpy. I hypothesize the difference is due to the former holding the cocoa grains apart with soluble sugary stuff.

[identity profile] armb.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, except you misspelt "place cauldron on campfire" for the last bit.

[identity profile] enismirdal.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Admittedly I usually heat milk, add chocolate powder, then top up with boiling water, mostly because I tend to use lots of powder and if I use pure full-cream milk the resulting mixture is waaay too sickly!

Green & Black's, add hot water, stir vigorously.

I also sometimes add instant coffee too.

I only make coffee or chocolate with milk if I'm feeling like something puddingy.

Me too. Mmmmmm.

I do this if I want a wake-up drink rather than a sleepy drink; for the latter I microwave a mug of milk and add the relevant amount of G&B sprinkles.

Where's "Buy it in a cafe" ?

Best one I ever had was on the platform at Basel railway station back in 1967. Or Basle. One of those Swiss places.

Set microwave to two minutes.
Put tablespoon or so of milk in bottom of mug
Do the first 15 secs or so of heating (makes next step much easier)
Whisk in cocoa powder and brown sugar to taste with cute tiny whisk
Top up with milk
Do rest of heating

We must have been! I wonder what the whole story is, it has to be pretty complicated given the number of people who have to have lied at least by omission to us about it...

[identity profile] mhoulden.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I'd go for mix cocoa powder and sugar, add a bit of milk, stir well, add a bit more milk, stir well again until all the lumps have gone, and finally top up with milk and then microwave.

In the past I used to do put cocoa powder in cup, add boiling water, mix and then add sugar. That was a long time ago.

I'm lactose intolerant, but that's still the right way to do it even if it's soya milk.

Boil kettle. Put powder and small portion of milk in bottom of mug. Stir thoroughly, add boiling-but-slightly-cooled water to fill the mug whilst stirring.

Mix cocoa with a little milk to make a paste, add more milk, heat in the microwave. (If it's a nice one like Green and Black's, otherwise dump hot chocolate in, add water.) It's especially sweet and tasty with goat's milk. ^_^

I tend to make milkshakes with my Cadbury's drinking chocolate powder more often than I make hot chocolate. So the two alternatives for me are:

Heat milk in pan, take off heat, add chocolate powder and whisk until dissolved. Serve.

Put half pint milk, 2 scoops icecream and chocolate powder in blender, blend until frothy and mixed. Serve in two pint glasses. And don't forget to swirl the last inch before drinking it, to get the bits that have settled.

Making hot chocolate by melting chocolate into the hot milk can be nice, but it is a lot more effort as well as more expensive and requires there to be chocolate in the house that hasn't already been eaten.

Instant chocolate powders which also contain powdered milk and just require you to add hot water are by and large horrible since I don't like powdered milk. And if they're diet versions with fake sugar in they're usually even worse.

half a pint and one scoop of icecream per person, but I only usually bother to make it for 2.

Take hot chocolate jar out of cupboard, read instructions on back, do whatever it says on them. It seems to vary a lot between brands, and I do it so rarely that I keep forgetting anyway, so I have no fixed opinion on how best to do it.

I believe there exists hot chocolate I'm allowed to drink, but I haven't yet gone out of my way to find it.

[identity profile] ex-lark-asc.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
I bet the Charbonnel et Walker stuff would work for you, it being actual chocolate in a handy grated stylee...

[identity profile] imc.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Put instant hot chocolate powder in cup; add hot water; stir. Optionally add cold milk.

…or…

Heat up some milk. Put cocoa powder and sugar in cup; add small amount of hot milk; stir; add rest of hot milk; stir.

I haven't made any proper cocoa in years, and the same would be true of instant hot chocolate were it not for [livejournal.com profile] smallclanger finding a jar the other day and demanding to drink some.

[identity profile] teleute.livejournal.com 2007-10-16 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Woot! I finally get to answer an 'insensitive clod' box truthfully :-)

(But when I used to make hot chocolate I heated the milk first, then poured it on the powder - which is approximately, but not quite, your first option)

[identity profile] dave holland (from livejournal.com) 2007-10-16 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I voted twice (options 1 and 4) 'cos I make it for my wife. :-)
