Friday evening we watched the original Italian Job with Mike and Christi, which was fun. Then we started watching again with Icelandic subtitles (but not for very long). Up quite late as a result, but still managed to get up on time on Saturday morning to head off to Becky's place and then to the forested depths of Norfolk for Go Ape.

What this involves is a series of aerial assault courses: climb up the first tree using a rope ladder, then move from tree to tree via a series of obstacles 30-40 feet above the ground, before sliding down a cable to the ground again at the end (and walk to the start of the next one).

It started off quite simple, e.g. feet on one cable, hands holding the other, and go across sideways. The two that particularly stick in the mind are the tarzan swing - attach yourself to a dangling rope and swing across empty space into a net - and the stirrup bridge, which involved stepping from one dangling stirrup to the next, which was by far the most difficult of them all for me.

There should be some photos around somewhere sooner or later. Hooray for Becky for organizing it, and thanks to Simon for the lift.

Becky's party later in the evening was good too though I was sufficiently tired that I left quite early and collapsed into bed.

Things seem to be back in a usable state now. I gave up on Gnome's attempts to translate the gnome 1 config to a gnome 2 one and started from scratch. Sawfish seems to have mostly coped though one or two things like outline window resizing got lost (and seem to have disappeared from the point-and-drool UI too, but setq is my friend). Gnome 2 so far seems clunkier than gnome 1 which makes me wonder what they think the point is, but still.

...and it still forgets random bits of its own configuration. So a clunkier user interface, long-standing bugs unfixed, and a painful upgrade procedure from Gnome 1. I'm struggling to see the point here.
