Amex - ptui! They're not accepted in all that many places, mainly because of the way they treat those places that do.
As for the Mastercard/Visa thing - HBOS recently (well, a few months back) changed my standard Visa to a Mastercard, somewhat to my annoyance, because the only reason I was keeping that card was because it was a Visa, and I have encountered one place that takes Visa and not Mastercard.

One place ever, and that was a few years ago.
Since I carry an MNBA Platinum Visa, it's not a real problem, but I'm bemused that HBOS haven't changed my HBOS Platinum Visa to a Mastercard (even though they noticed I never actually used it, and didn't bother sending me the new piece of plastic). But my card of choice is a Mastercard.
