The pile of books on my desk is interfering with the computer room's acoustics (not that they were great to start with, but still).

What you want to do then is replace them with a roll-up, high-quality ebook (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=569&ncid=738&e=3&u=/nm/20040126/tc_nm/tech_philips_displays_dc). (Six years since epaper was invented, and finally it looks like it's going to actually reach the marketplace. Give it ten years, and there may be no new generations of hardcopy romantics...)

It'll need more than a 5" display to replace e.g. a good atlas. But yes, roll-up displays could have an interesting effect on publishing.

Cheap, large, foldable displays make other things possible. I'd love an A1 drawing board with a pen interface that I could lean on and use as a desk or tilt to 45 degrees for better ergonomics.
