This year I took up Karate and read The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire (well, most of it; there's a bit left to go but I'm not expecting to have much difficulty finishing it on schedule).

The Karate will continue, and I have a huge backlog of more sensibly sized books to read, but I'm starting to ponder what I can do on a similar scale next year. Some time ago some of us made a joint effort to (variously) learn or improve our Latin; that kind of got stalled but I was considering trying to pick that up again on my own. There's several languages I'm interested in knowing a bit more about but Latin feels like a good place to start right now.

I'm also a bit jealous of the beatiful photographs some of the people I know are capable of producing. While my camera isn't exactly the most advanced pieces of kit I'm sure I could get more out of it with a bit of study and effort.

I'd be up for 'learn about photography'. I also have 'take up ballroom dancing' on my list :)

Well worth learning Latin; forget about the way it was taught in school. Have a look here (http://www.arlt.co.uk/) for all kinds of pointers, you'll probably find it far more interesting than mere declensions of verbs and arcane case endings (though I quite enjoyed Latin at school if only for the fact that my teacher was a fine-looking elegant redhead).

I already have TY Latin from the last attempt, and a certain amount of the language from last time and from school; but it's all in a very rusty state.

Why not check this out every week?
World News, in Latin, from Finnish Radio (http://www.yleradio1.fi/zgo.php?z=20031213201140852741)

thinks... Finnish.... now THERE'S an interesting and yet fiendishly hard language to learn...

Ballroom is fun. That's one thing I meant to do I actually did do in my first week in cambridge, and while I've drifted away now it was very good, and not as difficult as I'd assumed, me having two-and-a-half left feet.

I was considering reading the Decline and Fall; at least it's made its way onto my to-read list, which is currently expanding faster than my read list. I take it it takes a while to get through?

I started Latin from scratch (ab initio!) in October at Birkbeck (University of London) and I'm loving it. Previous experience had proved that I don't have the drive to learn it independently, because the beginner's lot is dozens of case endings that can't be learnt except by drill.

It would take two or three years more of evening classes before I could read a text, but simply knowing where to start has been rewarding (especially for folk-etymology).

Let's start trying to learn Latin again (if only because I have to keep up with [livejournal.com profile] addedentry!). I propose starting a Latin irc channel on which to practise. 8-)

At least for my own satisfaction I need to get a better theoretical grounding, I think. So the first step will probably involve a bookshop.

Mmm, I might be interested in borrowing that.. depending on what flavour of theory it is!
