You want tickyboxes here, they're not mutually exclusive.

You left out: "I'd like to have children, but I can't" and "I'd like to have children but I've left it too late." How insensitive!

FWIW, right now, I don't want a relationship ever, so that kind of gives an obvious answer to the above.

Aye. But fond as I am of your polls, there is really answer here for me, this time. PS: I am not a prokaryote.

"I could live with children" I think would best summarize my position. As in - given a choice in the matter I'd rather not, but if an otherwise-perfect partner was set on them then I expect I could be persuaded to the opposite point of view, and likewise I probably wouldn't push for an abortion in the case of accidental pregnancy if the situation didn't look too doomed.

In answering, I noted very precisely the distinction between "I don't want children ever" (which is true) and "I want never to have children" (which is merely very nearly definitely true).

If you fancied doing a followup poll, I'd be interested to see how interested people are in propagating their genes through biological parenthood, versus raising an infant, raising an adolescent, having offspring that have attained adulthood, having grandchildren, and having living relatives to support them in their frail dotage.

…so I guess I might do that poll, if you don't. (-8

I don't want children now. And there's rather less "later" left than there used to be. Plus I'm not sure I really want to be a "old" mum, I like having a mum as young as mine is, which puts me about 10 years too late already.

If another afper replies with an icon of themself as a little child, I am going to get freaked.

Consequently, I am forestalling this by thus devaluing it of any meaning. Forewarned is de-armed.

I would rather like children, but only if I get to the point where I feel my circumstances are right to be responsible for someone else for several years. If that never happens, or if it turns out that I'm sufficiently infertile that children can't be produced without a hell of a lot of medical faff, then I'll consider adoption/fostering or just get on with life.

I kind of like the idea of having kids, mainly to see what happens next. In terms of warping the fragile little minds of the next generation, I'd rather become a lecturer.

My mother is already hinting about grandchildren, but mainly for "We need people to pay taxes to fund my pension" reasons.

Yeah there's the problem, cost of living and all that, none of us are going to be able to have children we can look after properly until we're too old, and hence we'll just be outbread by chavs who have no reason to wait because it'll be no better later, and the, er, culturally fertile.

It's complicated. I don't want children right now, my relationship and living arrangements are not at that stage yet. BUT, I am old already. If I had a child now, I'd be an 'elderly primigravida'. When my living arrangements are ready, I'd like to enjoy living with J for a while (and get married) before having children. At that point, I would be termed 'geriatric primigravida', being 35 or older (and actually, I'd like us to live together for a bit longer before having children, but that'd mean being close-on 40 by then). The risks involved are greatly increased for both mother and child. I hate all of this.

Really really hate it.

Biology sucks and is deeply unfair.

Complicated.

I'm the sane, intelligent side of my family; I'd hate to see that die out, since the only other blood relative of breeding age I have is a misanthropic loony. But, I hate the thought of being stuck at home with children and of giving up my financial and emotional independence to them; not to mention that I'm ill in wacky ways which would mean that coping with the stress of having a young child would make me constantly exhausted (more so than normal, I mean) and *very* ill a lot of the time. Which would be Shit™.

I think if I were ever to have children I'd want either to be able to pay a nanny or to be able to recruit my own extended family (ie mum) into doing a large share of the day-to-day care; I can't ever see myself as a career mum. If I could get an ovary taken out and frozen in the name of future donation I'd be delighted..

You've got it (relatively) easy. Some of us your age aren't even in a relationship. And whilst it's true that I'm not up against the same biological time limits you are, I would by proxy, if I ended up with someone my age. (And whilst I could theoretically find someone younger than me, the older I get the less likely that gets. But that's a whole 'nother grumble.)

Surely if you were in that position, you could honestly tick "I want children" because, well, you do. The extra information might be important, but there is still a box you can tick without lying. And what else are comments for?
