Finally made some progress in the processy stuff at work that might let me write some code sooner rather than later. I'm not sure whether it was coincidence that this only happened when we had a power cut.

I spotted the Livejournal valentine system, which seems to be both more and less flexible than it sounds. It lets you say that you like someone without them finding out about it unless they say that they like you to (for values of "like" ranging from "think they're cute" to "want to go out with them"). But you can only list three people, and clearly this is not enough.

So do I use it to tell people like [livejournal.com profile] lnr and [livejournal.com profile] lark_ascending who already know I like them that I do in an contorted way, or do I use the available slots some other way (and probably make my life even more complicated)?

*shrug* if there's people you like enough that it would make you life more complicated if it turns out they like you too then why don't you just talk to them? Are you really that afraid of being turned down?

Personally the whole thing leaves me cold, but then that's probably just the mood I'm in at the moment.

Because if you say you like them, it's your responsibility to live with it afterward, but if a computer says you like them, it was just chance that they found out. Trust me: I'm an expert :-). Still screws up your life, though...

Acksherly (quickly checks friends lists to make sure the person concerned isn't reading), it's useful for me: means I can send someone a Valentine's card without any chance of them actually receiving it. Now that's computer-mediated social engineering :-).

"complicated" was intended rather more light-heartedly than that...

Checking friends lists isn't enough on an unlocked post: rjk's mum managed to find one of mine :-)

Maybe I'm just not shy enough to get it these days.

Well, no, but if she's this far out of her usual read list, she has only herself to blame :-). It's not as if the whole messy mess isn't fairly well-documented to start with...

"Using the available slots some other way" might make your life more complicated, but provided it's all safe, sane and consensual...

... oh, I see, not like that. ;)
