You just type in the search box and it goes off and gets the results. There's a slight delay from all the redraw work if there are a lot of hits, but you've all got blindingly fast CPUs these days, right?

Smells like a crap tree widget. It shouldn't really be having to do anything once it's got big enough you don't see it all on screen (except counting things up so it knows how big to make the scrollbar, I suppose.)

The tree layout code is home-grown (the built-in GTK+ stuff demanded I know the children of any given node on demand, but in fact I have to wait a network round trip to find out). Currently it figures out how big the whole layout is by creating the per-node widgets and then asking how big they are and adding it all up.
