In a twist of fortune I discovered last night that my PS3 does iPlayer so I'll be mostly catching up on there I guess!

Felt like a good story struggling to get out from under all the RTD...

The Dr acquiring hubris (rather bizarrely briefly) made me think of RTD, actually.

I didn't think there was anything brief about RTD's hubris, though.

Well, that was terrible. Unlike 'Planet of the Dead', which was entirely bland from start to finish, it was mostly bad with occasional scaling of the heights of adequacy.

And someone, please, shoot garotte Murray Gold.

Just keep thinking: Karen Gillen. Karen Gillan. Karen Gillan.

Yes, that seems a reasonable summary. Particularly annoying (for me at least) was the point where I couldn't help thinking "this would make quite an effective ending" (and then looked at the time to see how much was left) about fifteen minutes before the thing finally ground to a halt.

Generous praise! Unwarranted, IMHO. It had so much potential, but failed miserably.

With Davies episodes you have to refine your scale of badness. The praise is to distinguish it from, say, 'Last of the Time Lords' or 'Journey's End', which were entirely bad with no redeeming adequacy.

My rule of thumb for new Who is 'never watch the series finale'...

Certainly, whoever does the sound effect design for the show needs a damned good slapping. The range of stock sounds used verbatim was incredible, and some of them were just plain inappropriate.
