SSD

I put an SSD in my Macbook. A few observations…

  • The instructions don’t mention that you’ll need a T8 Torx bit and the only photo (on p6) that might let you spot this obscures the relevant screws. Anyway, I now have a set of security bits.
  • SSDs remain expensive (or fixing price instead of capacity, small) compared to spinning rust but at comfortably below a pound a gig they are well within reach if you value the extra speed.
  • My Macbook knew my wifi password even with a completel blank internal disk and having been booted off a recovery image constructed on a machine without wifi. I suspect it’s storing it in nonvolatile memory somewhere. A useful feature but it would have been nice to know in advance.
  • I now have a used 120GB 2.5" (i.e. laptop-size) hard disk surplus to requirements. Does anyone have a use for it?

I imagine point 3 is related to the 'network/recovery boot over wifi' that I hear modern Macs support? But still, that raises an 'erk'...
