Yeah, but they all seem to agree that houses are (a) too expensive for me, and (b) getting more so. The fiddly technical details of exactly how fast house prices are galloping out of my reach are of at most morbid interest to me, and presumably at least some wodges of the BBC's audience feel the same way :-)

Presumably if they start galloping out of your reach slower than your reach extends, then you will become more interested?

In order to do that they'd pretty much have to stop moving, or start moving backwards. My reach isn't extending very fast at the moment, partly because ARM has become less generous with pay rises since the redundancies last year (and admittedly also partly because my savings haven't increased this year because I keep buying techtoys :-).

The faster they rise, the bigger the "correction" that looms, surely?

Since I want to upgrade house, a gigantic slump would be ideal. I don't care if my house is worth 2p, provided the one I want to buy instead is only 5p.

Then again, I've been thinking the collapse of the housing market has been more and more certain for at least two years, now. I must resist the temptation to get impatient!

If they don't slump before we've sold our spare flat then I pretty much agree with you.

My dad told me the other week that when he and my mum bought their house in 1967 it cost £2,200. Far out, man!
