I finally figured out why I don't like the idea of reading webcomics as part of my livejournal friends list, something that until now seemed like a vaguely bad idea without any firm idea of why. I read a comic once a day, and don't expect to revisit that day of the comic again, and only expect to revisit that comic at all 24 hours later. But other entries on my friends list I scan back through to see if there are new comments (yes, LJ's web interface sucks for keeping track of ongoing discussions, and I've not yet got an automated workaround for this); if I read comics through LJ then this scan would be clogged up with a dozen or so redundant entries per day.

(Even ignoring this objection there remains a nontrivial inertial factor; my current mechanism for reading comics regularly works fine and scales well, and furthermore would continue to be necessary unless I could read all of them through LJ, which won't happen, since some of them take active measures to ensure you read them via their own website.)

Uh, no, not if you filter them into a group of their own and out of Default View, then just read that filtergroup when you want to read comics.

If you come up with an automatic work-around for ongoing discussions will you alert me to it please?

I was going to say that. It's what I do.

(Out of the seven comics I currently read, one enforces that you read it through its own site, and another's RSS feed currently appears dodgy. That still means that by amalgamating the other five into a special LJ friends group, I get to look at three web pages in the morning rather than seven.)

That doesn't gain anything over my current arrangement though.

I was hoping someone else would (or had) come up with up and alert me, but yes.

Does it irritate you as much as it does me when LJ suddenly decides the comments page is too long and starts hiving off fractions of the discussion on to their own pages? Of course, it's the new ones which disappear, which is the opposite of what you want when you are looking for new comments.

Oh, yes, that's idiotic too.

Well, that's as may be (but see Simon's comment above -- anything which shaves the number of individual pages I have to load is cool by me, and presumably you could take out a couple that way), but what you were saying is that you have to load a bunch of comics in with your watchlist. You don't. So that's no excuse.
