You meet a genie, who grants you three wishes. Meta-wishes ("I wish for six wishes", "I wish for another genie", etc) are not allowed, and wishes are interpreted literally, so be careful what you wish for and how you phrase it. What do you wish for?

"I wish for everyone on Earth to be cured of all adverse medical conditions they are currently suffering."

"I wish for all current conflicts to be ended via negotiated settlement within the next three months, said end to please all conflicting parties."

"I wish that your chosen means of fulfilling my first two wishes should not involve causing suffering or death to anyone."

Wish three seems a bit odd; why not include the same requirement in the first two and have a proper third wish?

I couldn't find a way of wording it that wouldn't let a maliciously literal-minded genie to treat the first wish as two wishes, thus leaving me without any protective clause on the second wish, since that would now be the third.

a) I wish I knew if there was a God

Kinda dependant on the answer to the first one

b) I wish I knew what God wanted me to do with my life

or

b) I wish I knew what I want to do with my life.

c) I wish that I'll be able to do it

A maliciously literal-minded genie would surely carry out the wishes as you stated them, so by the time you got to the third wish it would already be too late.

If one asks for an end to all war, famine and disease then is that one wish or three?

If one asks for magical powers (including the abilities to end all war, famine and disease as well as to create untold wealth) then does that count as a meta-wish?

Naah, I don't think there's such a thing as "too late" for a genie, given the extent of the powers we *are* allowed to assume. Thus if the fulfilment of my third wish requires it to undo whatever it's already done and redo it by some other means, I think that really is *its* problem, not mine :-)

One, I wish for whatever the genie would most like.
Two, I wish for a poly relationship with the two people I most want in it to become possible.
Three, I wish for a steady private income of about 30K a year after tax.

1) A crack team of lawyers that will help me with wish 2.
2) Something very carefully worded.
3) Enough money to pay off the lawyers.

You'd want to index-link that third one. A vengeful genie might strand you in your old age with the equivalent of 30p a year...

1. Good health, happiness and general prosperity for [livejournal.com profile] imc, [livejournal.com profile] smallclanger and me. If the genie chooses to interpret that as three wishes I'd stop there.
2. A publishing contract and enough material to write a novel every 18 months or so with a very unpressured work pattern.
3. Good weather for the whole world (which includes enough rain, timed to arrive between 2am and 5am, as required to keep crops growing, rivers flowing, etc).

Clearly wish 2 needs to be retroactive to get wish 1 right. Erm. That leaves me without a real wish. Erm. OK. Wish 3 can be for really quite a lot of money indeed, enough such that paying off the lawyers will only make a small dent in it.

Worked round? Played straight into its hands, surely?

How many genies would like to watch the heads of wish-makers explode in slow motion, with the victim not dying or losing consciousness until the explosion and all concomitant pain had been fully experienced, I wonder?
