What happens when neutron stars collide and is 2000 light years a safe distance?

Having finished Absolution Gap I've started on The History Of The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire. I have eight volumes of this, and my plan is to read it in 2004, aiming to finish at least one volume a month (which gives me plenty of time for contingency, breaks, etc). While the language is clear and doesn't feel archaic the age somehow comes through nonetheless (occasionally it comes through in the meaning too; "modern" is the 1780s, Russia and Turkey are empires, ...).

Had intended to go swimming this morning but the timing doesn't quite work, so tomorrow (when there is more free time anyway).
