Father-in-law is the same, which confused me when I first saw his initials written down on something, I wasn't sure if it was the same person. I'm not sure I quite get the idea of naming a child for a parent, especially if you don't then use the name anyway, but I guess there's tradition involved. And in your case I can see your father's point in naming you that way around. (It should be compulsory for all parents to look at the potential TLAs they're creating.) ;-)
My family don't tend to name after living relations (says she with the middle name sort-of the same as her great-grandmother who was then living) so we can avoid all the politics implicit in such things. smallclanger's middle name was partially chosen on the basis that if he dislikes his first name it's a perfectly acceptable one to switch to (it was imc's first choice for first name, too), but I'm not sure how easy I'd find it to make the change, even if he chose it. I might wind up being the only person to call him by his original name.
