I remember reading about this guy as a kid.

I've done made a deal with the devil. He said he's going to give me an air-conditioned place when I go down there, if I go there, so I won't put all the fires out.

Hats off to him for managing to die peacefully in bed, given all the scary stuff he did!

For me, he was very much the epitome of the noble and acceptable side of American gung-ho: doing brave things that were of unquestionable benefit to a great many people. RIP.

I heard about him in school (most likely when he was called out to the 1977 blowout in the North Sea) - so why does this news report seem to imply he didn't do anything noteworthy between 1962 and 1988?
