They deserve it for all the other times it was their fault.
I've often found that power cycling the CM helps, especially if they had a short real outage but your CM didn't notice the line came back. Though I'm now blissfully NTL free, which is nice.
It's conceivable that just power-cycling it was the key in the manner you describe, but the cable connector in particular did feel somewhat loose, and the CM has been moved around quite a bit in the last few weeks, so a mere cable problem seems at least a strong possibility.
NTL has been hopeless all weekend and non-existent here today (despite repeated CM reboots), until M texted me to say you had yours working, at which point mine had come back. And their thoroughly useless status page and phone message said scheduled outage in Cambridge between midnight and 5am this morning. So I suspect it was Real, and prodding the CM just picked it up again once it had come back.
I had a problem with my cable modem yesterday too. The cure appeared to be to screw the coax more firmly into the wall. I don't know why this was suddenly a problem.
