I'm starting with `Learn Latin' (the book of the Daily Telegraph QED series by Peter Jones, ISBN 0-7156-2757-0). Although I don't have anyone to learn with at the moment, I am associated with a Latin scholar in the guise of [livejournal.com profile] purplecthulhu, (who got an `A' at `O' level Latin). So I keep threatening to send emails in Latin when I've finished the course :-)

Let me check my notes ... ah yes, we looked at that one when deciding which book to use. My notes say "annoyingly chatty" - just not my style, I guess l-)

Incidentally, looking at your earlier remarks about the pronunciation of v, when I put together (1) the classical pronunciation of v like we pronounce "w" and (2) the fact that u and v weren't originally distinct, the pronunciation of qu as "kw" suddenly became obvious rather than a curiosity.

I find the chatty aspect fine, since I'm learning alone, although it does make it a bit more difficult to review stuff as you feel like you are wading through a stuck record (or some such mixed metaphor like that :-)

Ooo, interesting! I hadn't thought of that!!!! Now, if only there were some Latin experts around here... :-)
