I've always been tempted to go to the DPRK just to see if it really is as crazy as it sounds: like a sort of Stalinist theme park (with real political prisoners tortured to death!); the idea of giving money to such a regime doesn't really appeal, however. A while back, when I visited Lebanon (which, incidentally, has some fantastic Roman ruins), I didn't have the time to nip over to Syria; some colleagues who did said it was well worth seeing.
I have, somewhere, a probably-about-8-years-old-by-now copy of a guidebook to the world's most dangerous places by Robert Young Pelton. A quick Google tells me it's now on the web (http://www.comebackalive.com/df/index.htm) (like everything else). Makes for fun reading, even if it's now a little dated. (Saddam Hussein? Who he?)
