Because if you're doing an optical illusion from an animated GIF you'll have to show that its down to a real optical illusion and not futzing around with images within the animated GIF itself.

Surely the same is true of any form of computer-animated optical illusion. At least with a GIF the tools to decompose it into its constituent frames are relatively easily understood; you could not say the same of disassembling a java applet to determine what it did.

Show me an animated .gif that can cause the dots to go green if and only if I'm staring at a certain point on the screen that doesn't rely on optical illusions and I'll be very impressed indeed.

If this is a shame, what would you consider a better version, given that this one relies on the moving dot?
