I always heard "Lord Donal". It seems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matty_Groves) that there are many variations (http://www.rambles.net/hinton_hutchings02.html). Still, under the circumstances, I think Donald should have been among the options.
I'd heard "Arnold", but ticked Donal because I thought it sounded better.
Family legend has it that a (distant) relative of mine had to leave Texas in a hurry having come home and found his wife in bed with another man and shot them both - apparently it would have been all right if he had just shot the man, but apparently one was supposed to assume one's wife has been forced into such a situation, at least if shooting without asking questions first. There was no mention of any challenge to a fair fight....
It's a song that gets sung at Arthsoc/SocT functions lots. Including, recently, the wedding of one of the members, tee hee. (I can't remember if he was likely to have heard it, but it was in an anteroom to the main celebrations so it wasn't likely to offend). It was observed that it wasn't very appropriate, but it was hardly less appropriate than some of the other songs.
I now have two versions, one from, er, some folk CD, and one from the Joan Baez songbook. They have different verses, so I keep meaning to amalgamate them and produce the Matty Groves Armageddon.
Which Joan Baez version though? There is at least one where Lord Donald is not bringing the yearlings home but was doning something that it would have been unpolitic to abandon no matter who his wife was sleeping with.
Oh AND "Lady Margaret" by Trees which I'm not sure is the same as the version here (http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/folk-song-lyrics/Lady_Margaret_2.htm) but it's along those lines.
