My new computer arrived, slightly earlier than expected. It's very fast. It initially looked like they'd managed to leave out the DVD drive but no, empty and used slots look identical. Rather than put buttons on the front of the case you use the open/close button on the keyboard. I don't know how it chooses which drive to open if you have two.

Mouse and keyboard didn't come with batteries, which seems a little cheap for a fairly expensive product. (Though even if I'd not been able to find some I have suitable USB devices around anyway).

The primary purpose of the new computer is dealing with photographs; in comparison to my iBook it is effortlessly fast. All my photos are already transferred to it, meaning its disk is 30% full before it's even a day old. (I bought the smallest disk Apple would sell me, their prices for larger ones being outrageous.)

Conveniently it had its MAC addresses on the back so I was able to edit my dhcpd.conf in advance, allowing it to go online without human assistance. Once I'd remembered to plug the ethernet cable in.

I'm not sure what role is left for my iBook. It still has some use as a specifically mobile computer - my Torchwood posts are put together sat in front of the TV - but it's possible that in 6 months it'll seem surplus to requirements. We'll see.

On the same day my breadmaker arrived. A quick trip to the shop and I had the ingredients for the simplest and quickest recipe in the book (and it was pretty simple) and a couple of hours later the smell of fresh bread broke into the computer setup. I'm pleased with the first result. I now need a cooling rack so I don't have to steal from the grill, and a bread bin.

I recommend http://www.flourbin.co.uk/ for a fantastic range of good-quality flour. The quality of the flour really makes a difference.

I have a high speed laptop which has an excellent quality. I only got it because I registered for a professional computer course and got my Career bank development loan. I have to pay back in a year laptop and course which is quite expensive. My digital camera is from ebay. I got it for about £60. It is a high quality one but I am not really using it. I actually wanted to use it for ebay when somebody wanted me to sell something for him. I did not earn a penny. It might be useful at some other point. I am actually glad having it.

We appear to have five (working) laptops between us, and none of them is surplus to requirements…

I'm surprised we didn't have the ingredients already to be honest. I really must go through the baking shelf sometime soon, it's got a bit mad. And I've promised to bake Christmas cakes for my mum and grandma again this year.

The things I bought were yeast, powdered milk and strong flour. There was in fact some suitable-looking yeast buried in the back of the cupboard. We have plain flour but the book was very insistent that that would not do.

Oh I thought we had some bread flour left too, possibly it's all gone. Wouldn't have thought of the powdered milk though!

It may be hidden at the back. I'm sure it'll get used eventually if there is some l-)

I've used an old ice-cream box as a temporary bread bin.
