Everybody in my family supplies each other with longish wishlists to select from; so you don't know exactly what will be in any particular present and you don't know what subset you'll end up with. I happily take this diminution of surprise in exchange for not having shopping for everybody else be a long drawn out nightmare covering all of December. If I had to choose presents for other people I think I'd just send everybody cards with cheques in and sod off abroad for the season.
