Thanks to people who are still cutting HP spoilers. I've started reading from book #1 now that they're all out, but so far have only done the first two books. I'll have to go catch up on all the discussion when I'm finished, as I'm currently feeling a little left out l-)

Book #1 seemed pretty straightforward. #2 though...

  • There didn't seem to be any indication of any interest from the staff into why Hermione had acquired fur. Did I skip a chapter somewhere? (Actually not entirely impossible since I read this from two different copies.)
  • I must have missed how the phoenix found its way into the chamber towards the end, too.
  • Malfoy's scheme for getting Tom Riddle's diary to Ginny seemed exceptionally risky; was it really beyond a (presumably) fairly competent magician to find some other way which wouldn't be so incriminating if it went wrong?

Having a magician pull a rabbit sword out of a hat in order to win was an amusing way to finish off.

We saw three people reading the new one adjacent to one another on the tube on Saturday, and the odd other copy being carried around.

It's generally suggested throughout the series that Madame Pomfrey is very discreet about any magical mishap the kids have - probably to encourage them to come forward when bitten by a dragon rather than waiting for the limb to drop off - so it's possible she'd just declared Hermione unable to attend lessons without giving details. It's not a policy you'd find at any sane school, but I get the feeling Hogwarts H&S policy is rather lax. Presumably all the parents have agreed not to sue.

Phoenixs (Phoenixi?) have a natural ability to teleport, so the normal wizard apparition rules don't apply. It's the same with House Elves, they can pop up when called for. There was something about Harry's loyalty to Dumbledore and his appeal for help summoning Fawkes to him, but it was a bit hand wavy.

Having the sword drop out the Hat onto Harry's head was quite amusing!

Enjoy Book 3 :)

Yes, I picked up the bit about the loyalty being important to summon the phoenix, and indeed remember it from the film. But I didn't know they could teleport l-)
