Well, of course Farthing et seq. are alternate history. And I have a vague recollection of Jo explaining that the robin on the farthing was a hint as to when the divergence point was (it's obviously some time before Farthing itself). It's possible the collared doves rode in on that. I think it's more likely a lack of awareness that the collared dove is a recent immigrant. I expect the vast majority of British people are unaware of that, let alone American editors.
