I have an album (by a dodgy goth band) whose opening track begins with the sound of a dial-up modem. It was, ahem, terribly futuristic when it came out. It actually made me laugh out loud last time I heard it.
I was just happy when mobile phone ringtone technology improved to the extent that they could go brrrring brrrrring properly when they rang.
