I have an album (by a dodgy goth band) whose opening track begins with the sound of a dial-up modem. It was, ahem, terribly futuristic when it came out. It actually made me laugh out loud last time I heard it.
I was just happy when mobile phone ringtone technology improved to the extent that they could go brrrring brrrrring properly when they rang.
I used to have the Radiophonic squelch jingle from the old Protect & Survive PIFs but it was absolutely terrifying if you weren't expecting it. These days I go for a rather drunken doorbell from The Money Pit, which at least sounds funny.
Harrumph; I was annoyed at the time when adverts for computery things on TV would involve dial-up modem noises: Because I didn't go online from home until 2001, my Internet access never involved dial-up throughout the nineties: I was using permanently-on JANet connections at university the whole time.
