Actually I read the original article - mother didn't actually leave child in car; mother left child playing unsupervised while she was on the pc (for 2 hours apparently), and child, who had a history of playing in and around the garage/car, got herself locked in it. I blame child locks. And children too stupid to figure out that they can let themselves out by winding down the window. And electric windows that need the key in the car, for that matter. And not (presumably) locking the car in the first place. Your kid plays in the car and you don't lock it up? FFS! She could have been reading a book and the same thing happened. (Just straightening out the overwhelming "OMG a mother brought the shopping in and forgot the kid in her rush to play eq" reactions people kept having to the story.)

Ironically, said mother was a member of Spouses Against Everquest (or something), who blamed the failure of her marriage on the addictiveness of the game (her husband being the addict in question).

Can people get a Darwin Award, if their stupidity causes the breakup of their marriage and the death of their child, I wonder?

I suppose there's a risk she might sprog again when she gets out of prison, but it does seem unlikely.

The Darwin Award should be awarded to those that improve the gene pool by removing their own contribution from it before it passes on to future generations.

I'd say she deserves a special mention for doing just that, assuming she doesn't slip up and sprog again. With luck, the judge will ensure that.

No, that's rather unfair on the innocent party. Darwin awards are only for self-destructive behaviour.
