Shortly after the last pair of updates, the jukebox happened to select NMA's "Stupid Questions". IPMFI.

League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen is quite fun but doesn't make a great deal of sense and doesn't have a particularly close relationship to the book. Kill Bill hangs together rather better, and is exceptionally (and cartoonishly) gory; I think Saving Private Ryan made the same point about violence better, assuming Tarantino is indeed trying to make a point and not just a mess.

I didn't come away from Kill Bill with any particularly general message, beyond such facile and obvious observations as "in a violent subculture, people die" and "cutting parts of people off with a sword makes a lot of mess". But then, I don't think a film has to have a point. As such.

One can (try to) make a point in a film without it being the point of the film...

There were lots of points in the film - all those swords.... :-)

QT was saying that he was making a film that the characters in his other films would go and see. Plus I guess it's also a(nother) tribute to various genre films.

Cartoonish gore; some of it is just an antidote to the way that most action films don't recognise that people are full of pressurised blood - I suspect Kill Bill's spurting limbs are actually closer to the truth; but some of it is deliberate homage to samurai cinema, which usually features similarly spouting wounds.

I don't think I was really referring to the spurting blood by 'cartoonish'; 'realistic' might indeed be closer to the mark. Rather I was thinking of things like the emphasis on bits of people being lopped off.
