Gosh. The possibility that '"wood" means the material out of which the trees are made' had never even occurred to me. So I certainly thought it was meant to mean that you can't see the big picture because you're too mired in the details, rather than that you can't see even finer detail because you're looking from too far away.

Indeed, I always thought it meant the collection of trees. But I was struck with uncertainty this afternoon.

It's a dead good conundrum; that.

I find it works well enough either way, depending on what you're trying to apply it to.

Plus, does anybody really think of trees as being made from wood? I think of it more as wood being a product of trees. "You can't see the pig for the pork" doesn't make sense, does it?

Although, I notice that (almost) everyone who picked the second option *also* picked the first option. Do those people think the saying incorporates a cunning pun, then? Gosh.

Or that the saying is not just about seeing the details, but also about what can be made using the trees ;)

"trees are made of wood" seems uncontroversial to me.

Both (1) and (2) are correct, and in the phrase you quote meaning (1) applies.

I know it as "can't see the forest for the trees", which happens to be unambiguous.

Of course, you've now gone and given me an Into the Woods earworm.
The woods are just trees.
The trees are just wood.
I have no fear,
Nor no-one should.
