I remember an election when I lived by the sea when there was a "Literal Democrat" candidate, and I thought what a missed opportunity it was (not to mention being a dirty trick).
I remember there being a big stink about a Literal Democrat candidate in.. 2001? Something about someone using that name possibly taking significant numbers of votes from the Liberal Democrat as confused voters voted for them by mistake, which ultimately cost the Lib Dem the election - it was fairly unlikely that 10000 people planned to vote Lit Dem.
Ah, here we go - Devon & East Plymouth, European Parliamentary election 1994. Adrian Sanders was the aggrieved Lib Dem. Someone else tried the same thing by standing as a Conversative candidate in the Littleborough & Saddleworth by-election the next year for good measure.
Not possible any more - a change in the law has banned such tricks.
