On a brighter note, it looks like I may have successfully fixed my penguin's leak.

Nothing worse than a leaking penguin, is there?

Now what's so disturbing about a smile (http://ennui.org/rone/pedestal/smile)?

That's not a smile, it's a chopped-off skull.

Any tips? Betty the Dalek has been looking a bit deflated lately.

Finding the leak(s): joints are a good place to look - I've fixed several leaks at the joints around his flippers. A very slow leak will be very hard to find - if you overinflate then they can get worse which means they are easier to find.

In this case it was actually the valve that was coming apart, fortunately in a fixable way.

The main techniques I've used for identifying a leak are listening for the his and then using wet skin to locate it more accurately (wet so you can feel the moving air more easily).

Fixing the leak: copydex works well for me. If you try and fix while the leak is active then it will just blow the glue out of the way however! I usually end up putting the glue on while inflated and then using a toothpick or something to spread it over the hole after a bit of deflation. When it's dried I put another coat on.

Incidentally when I say that valve was coming apart I initially thought it had just failed internaly and was letting air out through the hole that it's supposed to go on. But in fact it was that the upper part of it was separating from the lower half, which was much more practical to fix. Did mean I spent ages peering at the penguin's bottom though.

Why would my penguin need lube? No, just copydex.
