Thought so. They're very pretty.

That chain needs a clean, and some oil :)

Sure, but would the photo be as good then? (How long should I expect between replacing chains? A back of the envelope calculation suggests that one could be approaching 4000 miles by now.)

There's a heuristic based on how much the chain has stretched, but my bicycle book is at home.

If 12 links are more than 13 inches long, or something like that. Of course, if it's gone any further than that (and possibly even if it's just that far) then the gears may have worn to the chain - at that point, you need to change the cassette as well.

The chain would literally fall apart before that, if not for the fact it would have fallen off the bike even earlier. Change between 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch of "stretch" in 12 inches (which isn't really stretch, it's wear).

I tend to wait until the chain keeps slipping under heavy torque, then get it replaced.

Now replaced, in fact. If I have time I'll try to do a comparable photo of the new one.

Is it just me, or is there something highly sexual about photos of rusty metal?
I thought so.

Hmm. Not so keen on the first one - could do with being a touch sharper - hand held? The second one, however, is fab :)

Both are f/16, 20s, on a tripod. I'm not sure why the gears have come out so much better...
